The Goalball Youth World Championships are under way in Budaors, Hungary, with the group stages completed on Wednesday afternoon.

In the Women’s Group X, Russia topped the group after winning through undefeated, winning all four matches, dominating all four matches, likely the favorite for the tournament. They were followed by Australia, whose only loss was to the Russians. The Germans and Americans finished in third and fourth, both only managing one win, and had the only draw of the group against each other, a thrilling 5-5 draw. Spain propped up the table and go home early as they were comprehensively beaten in all four matches.

In the smaller Group Y, Brazil was the only undefeated team as they dominated the matches, easily topping the group. Israel was second with just one win, the only other team with a positive goal difference. South Korea managed one win, 6-3 over the hosts Hungary, who propped up the table in last place.

On the men’s side in Group A only Germany didn’t have a draw with the other four teams in the group having at least one draw. That would prove costly for the Germans as the draw was the difference between finishing at the bottom, in fifth, and third. USA topped the group as the only undefeated team, their only slip coming in their final match against the hosts, Hungary a 6-6 draw. Russia was second with two wins while the other three teams all had one win with Hungary getting third ahead of Sweden.

In the other men’s group, Brazil was the only men’s team to record four wins as they dominated the competition, showing themselves as the favorite to win the tournament, they were also the only men’s team with a positive goal difference. Israel was in second, with their only loss coming as a heavy loss against Brazil. Poland managed to win two and lose two, with South Korea managing just one win, against bottom of the group Spain who lost every match.
