The European Wheelchair Basketball Championship started hitting the business end of the tournament with the men’s penultimate group stage matches at Tenerife on Sunday.
In the opening game of the day Turkey made light work of Sweden as they cruised to a huge victory, 71-58. It was a tight start to the match but eventually Turkey pushed away to 1 21-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. From there they cruised, with Sweden’s 17-13 win of the final quarter not enough to come back as they were well beaten.
The second match of the day was a thrilling and tight match as France did just enough to push past Poland and get the win by one basket. France played a full court press to put pressure on the Polish players. In the end France managed to claim the win 66-64, with a surprising highest scorer in 1.5 point player Audrey Cayol scoring 26 points.
After a strong start to the game, Spain shot out to an 8-0 lead against the Italians and it would prove vital as the Italians could never get past that margin, Spain holding on for a 60-52 win. The stars for the Spanish were the Zaruzela twins who managed to score over half (32) of the Spanish points, proving vital in the win.
Lithuania’s lack of depth hurt them in the final game of the day as they ultimately couldn’t hold on against Israel falling to a 65-54 loss. Israel just pulled away in the final five minutes of the game and they claimed the victory, and with it passage through to the knockout rounds.
