The final day of competition for the Szcezecin World Shooting Para Sport Grand Prix on Saturday saw a moment of redeption for Ukrainian Vasyl Kovalchuk.
The final events of the competition were the 10m rifle and pistol events, R5 and P5 with Kovalchuk claiming the win in the R5. His win gave Ukraine their sixth medal and their fourth gold as they led the medal tally in the event.
It looked like Kovalchuk was about to throw things away as he struggled early in the elimination round but was able to find his form. Through the final rounds Kovalchuk shot no less than 10.7 to finish wotj 255.3 points, holding off Servian Dragan Ristic who finished with 254.7, German Michael Beutel finished third with 232.6.
Ukraine managed yet another gold medal in the P5 event, the 10m Air Pistol event as Oleksii Denysiuk managed a win in a tight competition. He just held off a challenge from Polish shooter Szymon Sowinski with a score of 356, three points ahead of Sowinski. British shooter Issy Bailey was well off the pace in third with 343 points. Brazilian Geraldo Rosenthal was unlucky to miss out on the podium as he could only manage an 8.7 in the last shot which was not enough to make up the score, just two points back.
The final of the R5 was also phenomenally lose, with Sinisa Vidic narrowly missing the podium, having a total of 631.0. But In the final, their total was just 211.1 which saw Beutel finish well in front of Vidic which sealed the bronze medal.
The Grand Prix will now move to Germany with competition beginning on Thursday.
