The World Para Sport Shooting Grand Prix got under way on Wednesday in Szczecin, Poland with the familiar opener of the R3 (mixed 10m air rifle, prone) event to kick off the season.
Slovakian Veronika Vadovicova came from behind to win the event, just beating out German Natascha Hilltrop. Trailing the German coming in to the final round, Hilltrop only managed a 9.7 which opened the door for Vadovicova to get the win by just 0.4 points. The final member of the podium was another Slovakian, Radoslav Malenovsky with 231.2 points.
The other event on the day was the P2, the women’s 10m air pistol SH1, coming down to the final shots of the event. In the end Ukrainian Olga Kovalchuk was able to hold off a spirited challenge from Swede Yu-Jueong Bang to get the win.
Kovalchuk held the lead going in to the final round and Bang was able to come up and level the scores with a strong shot. Bang was chasing her first ever career win but Kovalchuk woke up and managed two perfect shots to finish with 229.9 ahead of Bang’s 227.2. Ukrainian Iryna Liakhu was well off the pace in third with 204.8.
With Vadovicova’s win she tops the world rankings in the R3 event while Kovalchuk’s win in the P2 is still not enough to rain in the commanding lead that Krisztina David has in the event. The World Cup in Poland continues on Thursday and runs through Saturday afternoon as the series continues throughout the year.
