The South American Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Championships got underway on Tuesday in Peru as the hosts managed a win while Brazil demolished their local rivals, Argentina in the first set of games.
Brazil sent a strong statement to the rest of the competition as they easily defeated Argentina, showing why they are favorites for the tournament. From the very start Brazil took it away from the Argentines as they pushed out to a 22-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, Vileide Almeida led the way as she was able to hit 18 points giving Brazil a lead of 28 points at half-time.
With such an impressive lead Brazil was able to rotate their bench giving every possible combination plenty of game time. Two players were notable with Almeida finishing with 26 points while Debra Costa also managed above 20 with 21 points. Brazil easily claimed the win, winning 65-28, easily topping the standings after the first day.
The second game of the day was tight and low scoring in the first quarter as it was just 4-4 at the end of the first with Chile offering a surprising opposition for Peru. In the second quarter Pilar Jauregui came alive scoring eight points for Peru and taking a 15-6 lead in to the half.
In the second half, Peru managed to outscore Chile in each quarter easily, delighting a vocal home crowd in a 39-16 win. Pilar Jauregui continued to impress against Chile as she finished as the leading scorer with 14 points.
