The Australian Athletics Championships got under way in Sydney on Wednesday and with them that means the Para Athletics nationals are also in session with Isis Holt the star of the first day of competition.
Holt, a medalist in Rio 2016 claimed two wins in the Under 20 categories as she won the sprint double. Holt won the 100m and 200m Para-athletics events in Sydney, an event with multiple classifications due to a smaller field. In the 100m Holt claimed a time of 14.01 for the win backing up from her 28.97 time for the win in the 200m final.
After winning gold in Rio Holt is already eligible for selection for the World Championships squad which will be announced at the end of the meet. Winning the under 20s sprint double will have significantly boosted her chances.
The first two days of competition at the Australian Athletics Championship are devoted to Under 20s events, allowing the youngsters to shine. Holt was the one who drew all the media attention on the first day but hers wasn’t the only impressive performance. Erin Cleaver of New South Wales also claimed two medals, winning silver in the 100m and gold in the long jump, where she managed a T38 Australian Record of 4.62m.
The meet continues through the weekend with the open events beginning on Thursday with the multi-day events getting started. The championships will double as the selection meet for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London later this year.
